Share experience
One of the best character traits of a self-help mentor is that they can teach you from their past experiences. Although you don’t want the mentor to do all the talking, you are forming a relationship that shares the experience. This may help you go a different direction in life after hearing what the outcome of their choices was. It also may steer you into a specific decision. If you have a good relationship with your mentor, listening to their stories and having them share their stories is important.
In your shoes
A good mentor can put themselves in your shoes, so they can be understanding of what you are currently experiencing. They may have had a very similar experience, so this is easy for them, or they went a different route in life, however, they can empathize with what you are saying. Having a mentor that can put themselves in your shoes and really feel for you is important.
Stays positive
Not only is someone that is negative all the time to exhaust to be around, but they also are not showing you a great way to live. Make sure you find a mentor that stays positive, even when things may not seem super positive. They can show you what you can still take out of a negative situation and what actions will help you still get to where you want to go.
Personality
The personality of a whole in a mentor should have similar and great character traits. It’s important that they have excellent communication skills with you. Have you ever taken a class and the teaching was wonderful? They talked to you, they explained what they did to get through that grade, they were compassionate, and they really listened to you. These are similar personality traits to what you are looking for in a self-help mentor.
Positive outlook
A good mentor has a good outlook on life. They created their life and used tactics that they are trying to teach you. Because of this, it’s important that they are happy about their life too and stay enthusiastic about their job. Of course, not everything is rainbows all the time, but it’s important they enjoy what they do and you can tell they really do like helping others. It takes a specific and special person to be a mentor, if that person is them, they will be great at it and help you through life in such a positive way.
Never perfect
It’s important that a mentor knows there’s always room for error. You can always become a better mentor or a better mentor for someone specifically by learning new practices and theories. It’s always a great sign if they are reading up on these practices and the latest research. Although they really may not have extra time, if they continue their education with courses this is always a great sign. No one should be fully satisfied in their career, they should still want to grow and be able to do the best job they can. A mentor is no exception. Find someone that thinks highly of educating themselves and the importance of ongoing personal development.

A good self-help mentor will be able to give you honest and open feedback in a constructive way. Although you want your mentor to be positive, you always want their assistance. A good mentor can give you constructive criticism in an honest and open way. A way that will truly help you. Respect others
A wonderful characteristic of a mentor is when they don’t see some people are higher up than others. This means they respect all levels of work. If you asked them about someone in the entry-level position, they would have just as important things to say about that person as if they were the CEO of the company. This shows a level of respect and shows they won’t judge you whatever your goals are.
Example of goals
A great mentor shows you how to set goals for yourself. They show you how in their life they have overcome challenges and what they do to reach their goals. This did not just happen at certain parts of their life but today too. Goals are so important in life and something you should strive for. Make sure your mentor has recent goals and is working towards them.
Although a mentor can be a wonderful coach to get, it’s important that you find one that not only works well for you but has great characterizes so they really do help you to become the best you can possibly be.
